FINAL REFLECTION

The course that I had selected to study was a Korean Language course provided by the KBS World Radio Website. Going through the course at a speed suitable for acquisition learning, it would last only around four to five hours. However, to study efficiently, it would take much longer than four to five hours. Learning a language requires repetition and constant practice of speaking, listening and writing in order to efficiently take the Language effectively into transition learning. The course undertaken does not demonstrate any of the effective language learning skills, hence, from a learner’s perspective; I do not think this is a sufficient learning course.

After attempting this course for four hours, I found that the objectives for the course were covered fairly well, mainly because the different sections of the learning are neatly structured on the front page. With a neat structure, this provides learners, like me, with an organized knowledge of what I am going to be learning and what expectations of the language I should have. The expectations that I initially had for the course were that it would have many e-learning support materials such as audio and visual communications while going through the Korean grammar and vocabulary. In my initial expectations I did not consider the issues of feedback, interaction, and whether the course program would be suitable with my learning style. After completing four hours of the course, I found that there was not any suitable feedback or practical examples where the program is able to see my progression throughout the course. Although there were a number of audio and visual technical support materials to assist me in learning the language, there was a lack of interaction and feedback by the computer. As a language course generated on the computer, feedback and interaction would not have been expected, though I had neglected the importance of those aspects before having chosen this course. Interaction, involvement and encouragement during the progress of learning are extremely important. It is the interaction, positive and negative feedback of assistance in courses that give learners the motivation to effectively store the knowledge of the language in their memory. Though regardless of the specific learning necessities, the outlined course objectives were covered fully.

I have learnt many Korean vocabularies, phrases and the Korean alphabet and introduction of the language itself; however I don’t believe that it has valuably helped me with communicating in Korean. The course went by very quickly, especially in the individual chapters of vocabulary which consisted of twenty words or more. There was no pause button or a speed control of the pace the words were gone through and taught. It was hard for me to have learnt and remembered for future reference the Korean language because acquiring knowledge in an acquisition style of learning is not particularly useful, and again requires much more time and repetition to be able to take the language into practice.

I have taken past career, personality and learning style tests, and I generally need a lot of interaction and communication with friends, colleagues, classmates and teachers in order to learn effectively. I study well under the human interaction of discussion, practical examples, and human involvement in learning. Through this online Korean Language course, many of these learning aspects or styles were not portrayed, making it difficult for me to learn effectively. With little interaction and feedback, the course demonstrates an insufficient e-learning environment for learners. In regards to my personal learning style, I believe not only is it insufficient, but it does not suit the structure that I learn best. Through learning a multimodal style, a lot of interaction and dependence on my surrounding people is often needed. This course did not bring these learning needs, however I had enjoyed my four hours of learning Korean. It has certainly brought an insight and a greater interest to learning Korean in the coming year with my friends. Studying Korean in physical classes with friends and other classmates and physical facilitators, I believe I would proceed relatively faster than this course that I have undertaken.

I have made some mistakes to choosing a language to study in these four hours, though it was a great experience to understand the different e-learning courses and materials required for learning online.
